Management Team

Dr John Spangenberg (CEO and Founder of SeaQuation)
John has a background in finance and econometrics and has more than 20 years experience in predictive modelling and asset management. From 1999 onwards John was Global Head of Business Technology Investment Management at ING. Prior to joining ING, John worked for HayGroup (Saatchi & Saatchi), Rabobank, Achmea, MayBank and John Hancock Life Insurance (Chicago and Singapore). At Ernst & Young, John was responsible for commercial operations in Europe and Asia. In 2005, John led the management team to build SeaQuation as an entrepreneurial venture. John is a graduate of the University of Groningen and Maastricht. After his PhD in Economics, John underwent postgraduate training in Oxford University, Harvard Business School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. John is co-founder of the worldwide ValiT standard issued by the IT Governance institute in Chicago, and is married with three children.


Paul Williams CA (Senior Analyst and Strategy Advisor)
Paul is a specialist in IT governance, IT due diligence and enterprise risk management and has worked extensively with ING. He is a UK Chartered Accountant and a Member of the British Computer Society. Paul has been a partner specialising in technology risk management with the former Arthur Andersen He is a former International President of the IT Governance Institute and Chair of the IT Faculty at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. Paul is married with two children.

Gerrit Koning (Head of Finance)
Gerrit has significant experience as a senior manager and financial controller within Achmea where he was in charge of non-life insurance and real estate management. He was a long serving member of the ING technology investment management team. His focus in SQ is on money management (to scrutinise the operations and impose adequate internal controls) and raising funds. Gerrit is married with three children.


Paul Temperton CFA (Head of Portfolio Analyst)
Paul graduated in economics and is a certified financial analyst (CFA). He has extensive experience in financial markets, working at the Bank of England before moving into investment banking with Merrill Lynch. In recent years Paul has developed and implemented RAROC (Risk-adjusted Return on Capital) processes in respect of IT investment portfolios. Paul is a well-known economist and internationally recognised as a leading authority in financial portfolio management. Paul is married with two children.

Ryan Cawley BA (Senior Manager Business Development)
Ryan Cawley BA is Senior Manager Business Development and dedicated to SeaQuation Inc in Canada and SeaQuation USA Inc. Ryan has a background in Economics, Finance and Business Development. Prior to joining SQ in 2006, Ryan spent 6 years in New York City working with Goldman Sachs Investment Banking and with Sidley, Austin Brown & Wood Attorneys. Ryan also has experience as a winemaker in France and owns and operates a small vineyard on Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada.


Dr Robert Fabian (Chief Scientist)
Robert Fabian is Chief Scientist and based in Toronto. Bob’s 1965 Ph.D. in Mathematics (Computer Science) was awarded by Case Institute of Technology. He holds the ISP designation, from the Canadian Information Processing Society, is a Past President of CIPS Ontario, and was responsible for organizing the last two National Conferences of SMF Canada. In 2006, Bob was awarded the Gotlieb award by the Canadian Information Processing Society. Prior to joining SeaQuation, Bob has been a Principal with a national firm of management consultants, and a Partner with a Canadian management and systems consulting firm. He has held management positions with a vendor of networking and information services, with a major Canadian energy firm, and with York University in Toronto. Bob has held academic positions in Canada and the United States. As a management consultant, Bob has worked with clients on establishing outsourcing contracts, and on correcting problems with existing outsourcing arrangements. He has undertaken numerous planning assignments, from planning the future for one of Canada's largest commercial information systems, to helping small firms develop effective network and desktop strategies. To date, Bob is working actively on identifying and establishing computing best practice standards from a risk perspective.


Dr Siep Schaafsma (Head of Portfolio Analysis)
Prior to joining SeaQuation, Siep Schaafsma studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam and specialized in chemical engineering (PhD). After a career at Shell, he was assocated with DSM, a chemical company headquartered in the Netherlands. Siep held several management positions, mainly in R&D. Until the year 2000 he was responsible for Research Planning and Project Evaluation and global R&D portfolio management. Siep was also chairing a national platform on Biomass Conversion.


Other key employees in Europe include Siu Man (Doris) Tam BA and Sonja Kovaleva. Siu Man has a background in accounting and economics. She has 15 years experience in major banks and financial institutions in Hong Kong. Before joining SQ in July 2006, she was the Vice President of Corporate Banking Division of DBS Bank, a leading regional bank in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Sonja Kovaleva (Senior Scientist)
Dr Sonja Kovaleva received her PhD in computer science and operations research from the University Maastricht and her Masters degree in mathematics and computer science from the Moscow State University. Prior to joining SQ as a senior scientist, she worked for ORTEC - an operations research software company operating in the area of industrial planning and logistics. Her primary role at SQ is performing research and computational finance in the field of IT investments. Sonja is in her second level of the CFA (Certified Financial Analyst) curriculum.

Francois Joanette MBA
Francois is the founder of SBT Advisors, a strategic IT consulting firm in New York City. Prior to starting SBT, Francois was a senior partner at McKinsey & Company where he was a core leader in its Financial Services and Business Technology practices. He holds a Master and PhD in Managerial Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a BSc in Mathematics from Laval University.


Glenn Martin MA
Glenn Martin MA is a graduate of Oxford University. He has nine years experience as a CIO. At Schroder Salomon Smith Barney (the European Investment Bank for Citigroup) his team won Banking Technology’s IT Team of the Year Award. He was nominated for Best Personal Contribution in the inaugural Financial News Awards for IT Excellence in Investment Banking. As CIO for Cazenove/JP Morgan Cazenove, he won the Banking Technology Award for Best IT Operational Achievement. Glenn currently runs a company specializing in financial investment software.

Arijit Sengupta MBA
Arijit is the CEO and founder of BeyondCore, Inc. Arijit previously worked at Oracle Corporation, Microsoft and General Motors. He is recognized as one of the top experts worldwide in the field of eBusiness standards. He has spoken at technical and business conferences in a dozen countries, including XML Europe, Oracle Open World and Java One. Arijit was a member of the Joint Coordination Committee (10-member international supervisory / managing board) of the ebXML (eBusiness standard) initiative. Over 2,000 organizations including Boeing, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, SAP, Sun contributed to the ebXML initiative. Arijit was also the Co-Vice Chair 2002 of the Technology Subcommittee of EIDX (electronics industry association with members like Agilent, Cisco, HP, IBM, Phillips). In 2003 he received the RosettaNet "Outstanding Leadership in the High Tech Industry" award. RosettaNet is an international eBusiness standards body whose members include Dell, Deutsche Bank, Intel, Nokia, Siemens, and Sony.Arijit holds an MBA with Distinction from the Harvard Business School and Bachelors degrees with Distinction in Computer Science and Economics from Stanford University.

Prof. Dr Thomas Coleman
Tom was named the Dean of Mathematics for the University of Waterloo in 2005. Prior to joining Waterloo, he was a professor of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Cornell University and Director of The Cornell Theory Center. Professor Coleman is the author of two books on computational mathematics and has published over sixty articles in the areas of optimization, automatic differentiation, parallel computing, and computational finance. He founded and directs CTC-Manhattan, a computational finance venture in New York and is a senior research consultant for the Asset Management divisions of Merrill Lynch and other Wall Street Financials.

Prof. Dr Robert Austin
Prof. Dr Robert Austin - Robert has been a Professor at Harvard Business School since 1997. He has held senior executive positions with a new business created by a major technology company and was a technology manager at the Ford Motor Company. Dr. Austin earned his Ph.D. in Management and Decision Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University. He holds an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Management Science from North western University.
